Elementary & Early Middle School

What type of therapy do you do for elementary age and early middle school age children?

As children grow beyond the age of 5, therapy takes more of a focus on the child and the child’s role within the family. For school age children, therapy includes a combination of games and curriculum to help elementary school children learn independence and inter-dependence. For early middle school aged children, therapy provides preteens with the skills to learn to process and solve their own problems.

Therapy includes:

  • Adjusting to school, sibling birth, and changes in family structure including parent separation.
  • Developing healthy peer and school relationships including learning proper boundaries, controlling impulsivity, and obeying instructions.
  • Coping and resolving issues with bullies.
  • Attention and focus issues including situational focus issues, trauma-based attention issues, and assessing for ADHD.
  • Replacing negative behaviors with positive choices and behaviors.
  • Helping parents know when to step in and help their children and when to allow the child space to figure out a situation for themselves.
  • Navigating interactions with teachers, sports, and other activities.
  • Navigating relationships with peers and community.
  • Trauma processing and coping skills for children, including skills for parents to use when children are triggered.
  • Building new family systems including blending families, adoption preparation, and post-adoption support
  • Pre-natal and Post-natal issues with families and siblings who are feeling anxious or stressed about the changes that come with adding a new member to the household
  • Grief Counseling:  helping children learn to process their grief and build coping skills, and providing parents with the skills to help their children along the way.
  • Parenting struggles including parents with different philosophies on what is best for the children.
  • Raising a child in two households including: Relationships with stepparents and/or step siblings, Navigating two different sets of rules and expectations, living with different religious or cultural traditions, or divorce or separation.
